Colgate’s first football team was established in 1890, with Samuel Colgate Jr. as head coach. “There is no longer a necessity to lament, because we have no foot-ball team,” the Madisonensis reported on Nov. 1. “Arrangements were at once made to secure suits and now about twenty-five men are pretty regular in their attendance at the practice games in the afternoon. … As we have no trainer it is not to be expected that our eleven will be able to especially distinguish itself when it comes in contact with college teams that have had this advantage, but we feel sure the team will be able to play well enough to make the games that are played here extremely interesting.” The team played a short season of only two games, both at home. Pictured is the lineup from the game against Hamilton College, which Colgate lost 14–32, but the team overcame St. John’s Academy 14–6 a week later. Another November day —135 years later — Colgate Magazine dropped in on the current team, and 12 players jovially reenacted the old photo at Andy Kerr Stadium, with help from Fred ’50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Football Coach Curt Fitzpatrick.
