’Gate fate.
Susan Kornfeld ’74 Kennedy met three alumni in the spring and fall — two of whom were chance encounters approximately 8,000 miles away.

She first connected with Bryan Miller ’74 (second photo, below) in New York state after reading his article (“The Beard Award”) in the autumn 2021 issue of Colgate Magazine.

A few months later, in Cape Town, South Africa, Kennedy was in line for the cable car up Table Mountain when she spotted Flora Strollo MA’68 wearing a Colgate T-shirt (third photo, below). While chatting, Kennedy and Strollo learned that they had both, coincidentally, lived in Newell Apartments as students.

Then, Kennedy and her husband, Paul ’72, arrived at Zulu Nyala, a game reserve in South Africa, and met Jared Howland ’78 (first photo, below). They didn’t know Howland prior to Zulu Nyala, where everyone was divided into groups of eight and the Colgaters happened to be put together.

By that point, Kennedy said, “This is getting too weird!”

The Colgate tradition of saying “hello” to others on campus can be extended to a friendly greeting wherever people from the University community meet. Here, alumni send us their pictorial “hellos” while sporting their pride for alma mater.

Email your photos, either solo or with other Colgaters, showing off your maroon to: magazine@colgate.edu.
