ALANA provides home away from home during break

Back to All Stories

mhernandezstopp.jpgHere I am on campus, Thanksgiving break just passed, and the first snow has finally fallen.

I had a wonderful time with my friends at the ALANA Thanksgiving dinner. The food was delicious and I am appreciative of the fact that ALANA was able to provide a home-like feel for those of us who could not leave campus. I will share pictures of this event soon!

I had been hanging out a lot with my friend Jessica Ospina ’14. I basically camped out in her room since I didn’t want to stay alone during the Thanksgiving break. Still, there were quite a few of my friends staying; it wasn’t bad at all!

Coming back from a relaxing break was undeniably tough, but I am glad to see all of my fellow students back on the Quad.

Classes are reaching the final stretch, and it’s almost time for me to go home for awhile. This is not to say there is a shortage of activities on campus, because there never is, even when the semester is winding down.

I attended a Brown Bag event hosted by Karl Jackson ’14 about hip-hop in China. He took an interesting viewpoint on the meaning of hip-hop and its influence on a global scale.

It’s amazing to see another first-year being so proactive!

I was also able to attend a Greek-Life Advisory Council meeting. The conversations were truly helpful in revealing the details behind the Greek-life organizations on campus; something I had previously known nothing about.

This weekend should be great! ALANA is hosting its annual Winter Gala, and many accomplished students will be recognized for their tremendous efforts in building bridges across the diverse communities represented here at Colgate.

I will also be at the men’s basketball game on Saturday cheering them on against New Hampshire. I’ll hopefully be able to catch women’s hockey versus St. Lawrence right afterward!

Saturday also brings Dancefest, one of the largest and most respected events on campus. I can’t deny that the movement in the room will make me start dancing in the crowd, if not on stage!

Sunday will be the calm day reserved for work, as usual. I need to start studying for all of my finals!

I will make time for the Figure Skating Club’s winter ice-show, though. It sounds like a spectacular showcase of the one of the many talents Colgate students boast.

(I’ve been asked to write each week about what life is like as a first-year student here at Colgate. Until next time!)
