Women’s Hoops Drops First Loss of the Season 85-75 at Vermont

BURLINGTON, V.T. The Colgate women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season in a hard-fought 85-75 battle at Vermont on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders placed four players in double figures, led by Junior Emily Braseth (E. Grand Rapids, Mich.) with her first double-double effort of the season posting 21 points and 10 rebounds. 

 

Senior Malissa Burke (Traverse City, Mich.) added 19 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Allison Lipinski (Garfield Heights, Ohio) added 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range and freshman Molly Patterson (Euclid, Ohio) chipped in 10 points.


Colgate took a 6-0 lead to open the game on four straight points from
Braseth before Vermont’s Aaron Yantzi got the Catamounts on the board at 17:27. UVM would climb out of the hole to take its first of the game lead on a lay-up by Danielle Sabourin at of the contest.  The two teams would toss the lead back-and-fourth for the rest of the half. 

 

UVM managed to crawl out to a seven point lead, 28-21, with left in the half, but Burke and Patterson retaliated with two baskets apiece over the next three minutes to cut Vermont‘s lead to four.  A three-pointer from Meghan Curtin (Bronx, N.Y.) followed by two lay-ups from Braseth gave the Raiders a one point edge.   Colgate held a three-point lead, 38-35, with left, but consecutive buckets by Yantzi closed out the half and gave UVM a 39-38 lead as the teams headed to the locker room. 

 

In the second half, with the game tied for the fifth time at 51, the Catamounts put together an 8-1 run which was punctuated by a three-pointer from McNamara.  The spurt pushed Vermont ahead 59-52 with left in the game.  The Raiders responded with a 9-2 run of their own capped by a pair of free throws from Lipinski to cut the lead to one, 68-67, with 6:19 left in the contest.  Vermont rallied and put the game away with one final push.  A jumper by Yantzi at the mark ignited an 11-0 run and gave UVM its biggest lead of the game, 79-67, with remaining.  McNamara closed out the game scoring five of Vermont‘s seven points for the final score, 85-75.

 

For UVM, McNamara finished the game with a career-high 24 points and grabbed six rebounds.  Yantzi posted her fourth straight double-double with a game-high 27 points and 12 rebounds.  Junior Lani Boardman (York, Maine) added 15 points.

 

Colgate falls to 3-1 on the season, while Vermont improves to 3-1.  The Raiders take to the court again on Tuesday Dec. 2 to face the Big Red of Cornell University at home on
