Back to All Stories

Hamilton, NY — Colgate University’s Center for Outreach, Volunteerism & Education (COVE), and its governing body, the whY Board, will sponsor a lecture and discussion with acclaimed scholar of ethical leadership, Paul Rogat Loeb on Tuesday, April 1 at 7 p.m. in Love Auditorium, Olin Hall. The event is free and open to the public, and copies of his book will be available for purchase at the Colgate Bookstore.

Loeb’s most recent book is Soul of a Citizen: Living With Conviction in a Cynical Time (1999), which recounts stories or ordinary Americans who have found unexpected fulfillment in social involvement. Loeb’s campus visit combines lectures on Soul of a Citizen and his earlier book, Generation at the Crossroads, with targeted workshops. ‘Teaching for Engagement’ helps faculty, administrators, and staff explore how they can teach social commitment to America’s future citizens. ‘Leadership and Responsibility’ helps students ‘ and campus leaders in particular ‘ explore the barriers to engagement and ways to help involve their peers. His lecture at Colgate will address the desire and ability to make voices heard and actions count in a time burdened by powerlessness and cynicism.

For 30 years, Loeb has explored the psychology of community involvement. Soul of a Citizen explores what leads some people to get involved in larger issues while others feel overwhelmed and uncertain; what it takes to maintain commitment for the long haul; how all of us can live with greater courage and integrity. Loeb is an associated scholar at Seattle’s Center for Ethical Leadership and also the author of Hope in Hard Times and Nuclear Culture. He comments regularly on social involvement for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Psychology Today, Utne Reader, CNN, NPR, and elsewhere.
