Colgate Heads to Harvard and Brown This Weekend

HAMILTON, N.Y.’ The Colgate University men’s hockey team travels east this weekend to take on Harvard University and Brown University in two ECAC match-ups on Friday and Saturday night.

The Raiders and the Crimson have already met twice this season, with Harvard holding the upper hand at 2-0 as it won 7-1 at Starr Rink in November and 8-1 in the consolation game of the Badger Showdown in Milwaukee in December. Harvard leads the all-time series 36-14-4 and also leads the all-time series at the Bright Hockey Center by a 15-7-2 margin.

Harvard (15-7-1, 13-3 ECAC) is coming off a 4-1 win over Northeastern in the consolation game of the Beanpot Monday night at the FleetCenter. Dominic Moore and Tom Cavanagh each scored two goals in the win while freshman goaltender John Daigneau finished with 29 saves.

Junior forward Tim Pettit leads the team in scoring with 31 points on 11 goals and 20 assists.  Moore is close behind as the team’s top goal scorer with 15 and also has 11 assists to his credit. Sophomore goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris is 12-6-1 on the year with a 2.31 goals against average and a .925 save percentage.

The Crimson are 6-1-1 at the Bright Hockey Center this season.

Colgate leads the all-time series with Brown by a 38-15-1 margin and is 15-10 at Meehan Auditorium. The Raiders have won the last nine meetings over the Bears dating back to the 1998-99 season. The last time these two teams met, junior goaltender David Cann recorded his first shutout of the season and second of his career with a 3-0 win in November. He finished with 23 saves on the night.

Brown (10-10-2, 8-7-1) is coming off a weekend split at Union and Rensselaer. The Bears defeated the Dutchmen 3-2 Friday night before falling to the Engineers 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night. Before heading to Albany, the Bears had dropped three straight to Harvard, Providence and Merrimack.

Sophomore forward Les Haggett leads the team in scoring with 10 goals and 16 assists. Junior goaltender Yann Danis is 9-10-2 on the year with a 2.55 goals against average and a .913 save percentage.

The Raiders are coming off their first weekend sweep of the season with wins over Vermont and Dartmouth last weekend at Starr Rink. Sophomore goaltender Steve Silverthorn (Owen Sound, Ont.) continued his stellar play as he stopped 56 of 58 shots on the weekend for a 96.6 save percentage and a 0.96 goals against average. He was named the ECAC Goaltender of the Week for the second consecutive time for his efforts.

Four different players scored goals in Friday night’s 4-1 win over Vermont while Scooter Smith, Ryan Smyth and Adam Mitchell scored in a span of two and a half minutes to put the game away in the third period.

On Saturday night, P.J. Yedon scored the game winning goal at 4:36 in overtime to give the Raiders their first win over the Big Green in four tries.
