Photo: Dennis Banks, co-founder of the American Indian Movement, gives a traditional blessing over a meal at the home of professors Jordan Kerber and Mary Moran. The blessing involved putting a sample of each type of food and a bit of tobacco on a plate and bringing it outside as an offering. An Anishinaabe born on Leech Lake Indian Reservation, Banks gave a talk on campus titled “State of the Affairs of Indian Country,” from his perspective as a leader in indigenous civil rights since 1968.
