Christensen had just finished applying to volcanology graduate programs across North America when he and his geology professor, Karen Harpp, flew to Quito, Ecuador, for an academic conference. The trip became not only an opportunity to share their findings on the geochemical evolution of the Floreana volcano in Galapagos, but also an eye-opener towards an internship possibility.

The piece — a model of a series of calculations titled Tucker’s Group — was the product of the hard work of more than a few colleagues, including a member of the faculty in the mathematics department, a Slovenian professor, two Colgate students, and a Hamilton-based artisan.
