Chandler Washington ’23 is the first Colgate student to be selected for admission to the Institute for Responsible Citizenship, a two-summer program for America’s best and brightest African American male college students. Scholars in the program live together in a residence hall, work internships in their fields of interest, and participate in special seminars and professional development workshops.

“The ability to connect with other exceptional, young Black men — to network and learn from them — is really appealing,” he says.

More from Washington:

Campus during COVID: “It has had its ups and downs. The majority of the downs come from not being able to fully connect with what Colgate is known to be. However, getting to know the students on campus has been a huge highlight. You see the passions people have, you learn what they’re interested in, and that helps you grow as a person and as an individual.”

Debate Society: “It gives you the ability to think outside the box and also understand both sides of a perspective — to understand and figure out the best argument for that.”

Student Government Association: “I feel like the biggest thing in accomplishing a goal is thinking about those around you and communicating exactly what you’re trying to do and explaining why it’s a good thing.”
