My dad, being as extroverted and gregarious as Steve, told him that he needed to meet his daughter; that would be me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">When I arrived as a \u201cfrosh,\u201d Steve was completing his last semester senior year. He scoped me out in the bookstore, we dated that fall, and then he left for Washington, D.C. Although we stayed in touch for a while that spring, we went our separate ways\u2009\u2014\u2009until 1983. I attended a workshop in Potsdam, N.Y., where Steve was working as an admissions officer at Clarkson University. We went out for dinner, I stayed the weekend after the conference, and then returned to Sharon Springs, N.Y., where I had my first teaching job. We dated for a year and a half, commuting first across the Adirondacks and then across the Poconos when he joined the Lafayette College admission staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In June 1985, we were married in the Colgate Memorial Chapel in a secular Jewish wedding officiated by Huntington Terrell. Our reception was, of course, at Merrill House, where I endured several choruses of \u201cBETA Sweetheart.\u201d Now 33 years later, here we are\u2009\u2014\u2009still a Colgate couple.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deborah Springhorn \u201979, MAT\u201983 and Stephen M.
