Nutrition plays such an important role in our personal health and well-being. As the Colgate dietitian, I am committed to helping students on campus achieve their wellness goals through education, planning, and personalized consultations.

Deirdre Smith, RD, CDN

I hold a bachelor of science in nutrition management from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and I earned registered dietitian nutritionist certification in 2008 from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Prior to my arrival at Colgate, I worked in a clinical setting to assist individuals with eating disorders.

That experience helped inform my approach to helping those who struggle with their relationship with food, and I am also focused on ways that I can improve students’ diet and exercise habits.

I meet weekly with our executive chef to discuss feedback that I receive from students. This collaboration has led to the availability of gluten-free pasta and we have added a selection of roasted vegetables, seasonal salad, and additional vegan and vegetarian entrees.

I always encourage students to read the nutrition facts and ingredients lists for the food prepared on campus. All of those details are available at each serving station in the dining halls, online at Dine on Campus, and in the Colgate mobile app.

Healthy eating is eminently possible, even with a busy schedule. Every dining location on campus offers healthy— and quick — options. At Frank Dining Hall, we always provide a selection of roasted vegetables, a grain bar with four different salads, vegetarian and vegan options (including protein and starch), and a Chobani creations bar with fresh-cut fruit, berries, and homemade granola. Students can also find fresh vegetables and local produce (when in season) in the salad bars at Frank and the Coop.

Colgate students, especially those with special dietary needs or allergies, should think of me as a campus resource. Students can contact the Shaw Wellness Institute to schedule an appointment, and I am available to speak with athletic teams, student groups, and classes.
