Each year, the National Model African Union brings together undergraduates from Colgate and from across the country to simulate a meeting of the real African Union.

The event provides students with important lessons about public speaking, diplomacy, and teamwork.

“They have to work together. They have to give up on their egos a little to get something done,” says Mary Moran, professor of anthropology and Africana and Latin American studies.

Colgate has been participating in the Model AU since the mid-1990s and, in 2010, it became a half-credit course. It is just one of many ways the university helps students work across differences, a commitment the university promotes as it strives toward becoming an increasingly accessible and diverse campus.
