Colgate Love Stories

Mary (Gaynin) and Alex Agnant together in the Chilean Andes

Alex and I met in high school in New York City, and although he was two years ahead of me, we became fast friends. But he had a high school sweetheart, and I had braces, so the timing just wasn’t right.

Alex went off to Colgate and loved it so much he encouraged me to visit. Once I stepped on campus, it didn’t take much convincing that it was the place for me. One year later, I started my freshman year.

It wasn’t until a year later, both of us single and my braces finally off, that something clicked. There weren’t fireworks or some huge epiphany, but something subtle that happens when you start to see someone in a way you hadn’t seen them before.

After four years of friendship and almost four years of dating, we were married on June 26, 2009, at an old Greenwich Village carriage house in New York City. Many Colgate friends were in attendance, including Alex’s best man, Danilo Cortes ’06 (we snapped this photo on an excursion to Patagonia while visiting last winter in his hometown, Santiago, Chile, ).

We now live in Harlem, and last year we started our own production company called ImagineMotion Productions. Our main specialty is sports documentary and we do a lot of work for Major League Baseball Productions. We absolutely love working together.

Being in love isn’t just about meeting someone. When you find the person you’re supposed to spend the rest of your life with, both people have to be ready for that journey. In June, we celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary. If we hadn’t both gone to Colgate, we would have never figured that out. We finally found the right time to be together, and it was worth the wait.
