Members of Colgate Class of 2015 award their Torch Medals

Back to All Stories

From professors to deans, food service employees to athletic coaches, and many more, countless individuals contribute to students’ academic and personal growth while at Colgate. This spring, members of the Class of 2015 are recognizing those who have influenced their time over the last four years by honoring them with Torch Medals.

Started in 2013, the Torch Medal tradition is sponsored by the Konosioni Senior Honor Society, with support from the Office of Advancement. Awardees will be invited to and honored at the Senior Class Brunch this coming Sunday. A few students reflected on how their Torch Medal recipient has made a significant impact on them:

“Professor Julia Martinez epitomizes what it means to be a professor at Colgate. She has provided me with guidance as well as countless opportunities and experiences that have been extremely beneficial to my academics and future career. She has been a wonderful mentor, professor, research adviser, and friend and I plan to stay in touch after graduation.”  — Chelsea Dale ’15

“I have been lucky enough to take five political science courses with Professor Michael Johnston throughout my time at Colgate, including my year-long honors seminar, and he has been a patient and supportive thesis advisor, without whom my project would not have reached fruition. Saying he made a significant impact on my college experience doesn’t cut it. I feel so lucky to have had his guidance and insights.” — Amanda Golden ’15

Outdoor Education has been an incredibly transformative experience for me, and I chose Roxanne Benson (Outdoor Education administrative assistant) because she does so much behind the scenes and does not get enough credit. This was just my way of saying thank you for all she’s done for me the past four years, and giving her the credit she deserves.” — Ben Cook ’15

“Everyday, Heather Corey (Women’s Volleyball athletic trainer) helped me to push myself to be the best I could possibly be. Even when I didn’t believe in myself, she saw what I could do, not only as an athlete, but as a person. For that I am forever grateful.” — Mari Faines ’15

Mark Shiner (university chaplain and Catholic campus minister) was one of the first people to make me feel welcome and at home when I got to Colgate. I have had many great experiences with him as a member of the Newman Community and as a frequent visitor to the chapel basement. I even had the unique experience of spending Christmas with his family and going on a pilgrimage with him to Rome and Assisi. Mark has played a very important role in my four years at Colgate.” — Michael Ng ’15
