Technology in the classroom is an important aspect of the academic experience at Colgate, and faculty and staff are continuously exploring innovative ways to enhance learning.

This experimentation extends to alumni, as well, who are brought “back” to campus for intellectual engagement opportunities through courses such as the Advent of the Atomic Bomb taught by Professor Karen Harpp.

This past semester, more than 300 alumni signed up for the online atomic bomb course that was delivered through the edX platform. Alumni participated in the online discussion board, added to a collaborative timeline, took part in video conferences, and contributed to a “Twitter play.”

The Twitter project, in which students and alumni played the roles of “characters” involved in the development of the atomic bomb, was a huge success and led to an increased level of interaction among all the participants.

Watch Harpp’s presentation about the course, which she delivered at the Innovation + Disruption symposium held in New York City.
