Emma Ellis ’14
Emma Ellis ‘14, of Northwood, N.J., has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Mongolia.
Ellis, an English major with a concentration in creative writing, was a peer consultant at Colgate’s Writing and Speaking Center, where she found helping students to effectively communicate their thoughts to be inspiring and personally gratifying. Ellis said she hopes to have similar impact on her students in Mongolia.
“My first goal is, of course, to improve my students’ English language skills, and thereby increase their chances of success in an English-speaking global community,” Ellis said. “I also hope to promote intercultural understanding and the sharing of art and ideas between Mongolia and America by developing relationships outside the classroom and by volunteering at galleries that are bolstering the up-and-coming Ulaanbaatar art scene.”

Outside the classroom, Ellis plans to organize English-related cross-cultural student activities and to engage in embassy-organized public outreach activities.
As a writer with a particular interest in literary journalism, Ellis intends to produce travel articles and short stories about her experiences in Mongolia, to help increase awareness of Mongolian culture and promote the sharing of art and ideas.
“Emma is an exquisite writer who is highly committed to using both her writing and her teaching to further the project of intercultural exchange,” said Kim Germain, Colgate’s assistant dean for fellowship advising and a close adviser to all Fulbright applicants. “She is mature and poised, and I’m certain that she will thrive and have great adventures as an ETA in Mongolia.”
At Colgate’s recent awards convocation, Ellis won the Lasher Prize for Distinction in English Composition from the English Department. In the future, Ellis hopes to launch a career in journalism.
Ellis is one of four Colgate seniors awarded a Fulbright grant for the 2014-2015 academic year. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.
