Family Weekend 2012

More than 900 parents and family members journeyed to Hamilton last Friday through Sunday to spend Family Weekend with their undergraduates. The university’s red-carpet welcome included a full schedule of classes, performances, athletic events, and departmental receptions.

Faculty members opened their classroom doors to parents, who had the chance to sit in on courses ranging from physics and statistics to political science and anthropology.

It was standing room only for career services director Mike Sciola’s presentation, “Parental Guidance Suggested: Successful Careers Start Here.” Parents were able to engage Sciola (above) in a conversation about the career development process and hear more about the many resources, programs, and opportunities available for Colgate students as they connect their passions with opportunity.

Classes done and the weekend looming, families walked down the hill to experience entertainment in the village and competitions on Colgate’s athletic fields. The Raiders turned in strong performances both at home and away. Football and men’s hockey won on the road, and field hockey earned its place in the Patriot League tournament with a home-turf victory over Holy Cross. At the Patriot League Cross Country Championships on Colgate’s own Harry Lang course, senior Chris Johnson (above) finished first — more than 17 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

“Every time we set foot on campus for one of these weekends,” said Karen and Charlie Daugherty P’15, “we come away with a deep sense of gratitude that our son is part of this special college community.”
