Raider is named finalist for top men’s lacrosse award

Colgate men’s lacrosse junior Peter Baum was announced today as one of the five men’s finalists for the 2012 Tewaaraton Award by the Tewaaraton Foundation.

First presented in 2001, the Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the preeminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States.

Baum, who was a top-25 selection last season, is the only Patriot League player to make the cut. He and the other four finalists are invited to attend the 2012 Tewaaraton Award Ceremony that will take place May 31 at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.

The attackman is having a standout 2012 season and has already been named the 2012 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. He leads the country in points per game (5.81) and goals per game (4.00), and has a total of 93 points from 64 goals and 29 assists.

The junior has helped his team make program history with 13 wins in a season amongst other team records, while also setting seven individual Patriot League and Colgate records. His records this year include points and goals in a single season for both Colgate and the Patriot League, as well as three Patriot League Tournament records. Baum is also currently tied for second in program history with 127 career goals, is fourth with 29 assists this season, and is fifth in career points with 172. He also ranks fourth in league history in career goals.

The five men’s and five women’s finalists were picked from a list of 25 men and 25 women nominees that was released on April 26. The original men’s and women’s watch lists, were announced on Feb. 15 with additions made March 20 and April 3 and were ultimately comprised of 82 men’s players and 57 women’s players.
