Colgate’s Seven Oaks Golf Course is receiving some rave reviews from high school golfers competing in the Section III tournament.

More than 80 golfers participated Thursday in the qualifiers. The top 20 plus ties qualify for the second round of play at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The high school golfers are vying for the chance to play at the state finals to be held in June in Ithaca.

One golfer, Drew Lane of Weedsport, told the Auburn Citizen: “It is so scenic, so beautiful, so well designed. This is a course that pros play and that makes for a pretty cool experience.”

The article also shared some of the history of the course, which was designed by Robert Trent Jones. Ground was broken for the first nine holes in May of 1956, and they were completed and opened for play July 4, 1958. The second nine was completed and open for play in September of 1965.

Seven Oaks has been called one of the best campus courses by Golfweek, and was recognized by Golf Magazine as one of the best public courses in New York state.
