Colgate Day makes for a very busy weekend

Happy #ColgateDay
Happy Colgate Day! As many may know, Colgate was founded by 13 men with, “13 dollars, 13 prayers, and 13 articles.” As a way of remembering this humble beginning, every Friday the 13th the Colgate community celebrates its history. All day today, students will be wearing maroon to show their Raider pride. (Take a look at the Colgate Facebook page for alums in maroon.)

As part of the Kerschner Family Series: Global Leaders At Colgate, Sir Richard Branson will be speaking tonight at 6 p.m. Students are eager to hear this highly anticipated lecture; it is going to be a great opportunity for alumni, parents, and current students to come together and continue the celebration of Colgate Day.

This week started off with a visit to the Hamilton Movie Theater. For my Challenges of Modernity class, students attended a required screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s film Vertigo. It was great to be able to see the movie in the Hamilton Movie Theater because it presented “Vertigo” in a way that we could truly appreciate Hitchcock’s use of cinematography and theatricality. I had never seen this film before and I really enjoyed it.

This was Charity Week for many clubs on campus. One creative fundraiser was a Bachelor Auction run by Brothers. By having the highest bid on one of the male members of Brothers, the bidder won a date with him. I went to support my friend who volunteered to be auctioned off at the event. The auction raised over $1,500, all of which is going towards building a schoolhouse in an impoverished community abroad. The event was entertaining and a great time.

Thankfully, this weekend’s weather forecast looks promising, because Gamma Phi Beta is hosting their charity “Crescent Classic” soccer tournament this Saturday. Teams signed up to face off on Whitnall Field for an afternoon of friendly competition. All of the proceeds are going to the Madison County Children’s Camp.

The end of next week is Spring Party Weekend, and students are getting excited. Avicii is playing the main concert show and several other bands are coming to perform at smaller events. This upcoming weekend is one of the few left in the semester before finals. I am looking forward to seeing the many bands perform.

I would like to welcome the accepted students of the Class of 2016 who are coming to Colgate for April Visit Days. Enjoy every minute of the experience and take advantage of the amazing things Colgate has to offer.

Look every Friday for my blog entries about what is going on at Colgate.
