My biology class headed to the Ho Tung Visualization Lab one day this week to watch a film in place of a regular class lecture. The theater-type room was a great environment to see the National Geographic documentary.
The vis lab is a fantastic way of showing films and videos to large classes, and the IMAX-like experience is a great resource to have on campus. I learned that the vis lab shows a lot of different movies and documentaries during the year for students and the general public to attend.
For many students, this past week was stressful and packed with midterm papers, midterm exams, or both. Case-Geyer Library has been absolutely packed all week with students preparing for their exams.
Students studied anywhere they could find a seat: from the reading room, to the library’s café, to a secluded carrel. I had my first midterm exam as a Colgate student this week, (and therefore a lot of coffee while preparing) and it is a relief to have taken it before fall break.
As I type this blog post on my MacBook and check my iPhone for emails, I cannot help but to reflect on the impact Steve Jobs had on college students everywhere.
Walking around campus and seeing students using Apple products demonstrates how Jobs’s technology has transformed college campuses around the world.
Apple offered an education discount on computers for students buying MacBooks for college, therefore promoting MacBook use on many campuses. Jobs and Apple have influenced the way we learn and keep in touch with our families while we are away. He will surely be missed, but the influence of his technology on our culture will be felt for many years.
Students have been excited about having a few days off for fall break. Many students have not left Colgate since they arrived here, and the upcoming break is an excellent opportunity for them to rest, relax, and regroup.
Personally, I am going home for break, but many students are traveling to visit their friends at other colleges. I look forward to fall break and returning home to see my family and friends, but I am definitely sure I will miss being at Colgate.
