Visions offers good information about campus groups

mhernandezstopp.jpgI’m back!

I sure had a great week. I attended a Visions meeting where student representatives from the organizations on campus came together to talk about up-and-coming events. There are so many different clubs, organizations, and groups here at Colgate.

A few of my friends were there, acting on behalf of their clubs, like my new buddy Medvis Jackson ’11, who came to represent Brothers. Brothers is a group that is dedicated to raising awareness about the political, social, and academic issues that men of color face on campus, while also fostering a sense of camaraderie between all Colgate men.

From that meeting, I got a taste of what activities students are involved in, and the diversity of clubs that I can participate in.

I also attended a SafeZone training, where I learned a bit more about the LGBTQ community and the struggles they face. My eyes were opened by the training, and I’m glad to be in an environment were inclusivity is highly valued.

I can’t wait to go back to my friends and tell them about the different ways to get involved with something they are passionate about. Not to mention all the fun events, and food that goes along with them!

The weekend is thankfully approaching fast. I definitely need a break from the stress of all that homework; the eternal woe of a college student!

But to keep what I like to call my “academic edge,” I’ll be going to the NASC Colloquium: “A Matter of Life and (Cell) Death: The Role of Apoptosis in Viral Pathogenesis” at the Ho Science Center today.

On Saturday I’ll be suiting up for the big football game at Syracuse University. It’s going to be wild. Go, Raiders!

In case I can’t go, I’ll head over to Gatestock, Colgate’s take on the classic Woodstock music festival with our very own local and school-led bands. This could be my chance to jam out to some good home-grown music, attend an awesome carnival, and chow down on some barbecue food!

(I’ve been asked to write each week about what life is like as a first-year student here at Colgate. Until next time!)
