HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate men’s lacrosse team came away with a 7-5 victory over Lehigh in an unusual contest on Tyler’s Field Tuesday night. The Raiders opened the senior day match-up with seven straight goals, but were held scoreless in the second half as Lehigh mounted five unanswered tallies, but fell short of a win.
The Raiders were relentless in the first period scoring four uncontested goals to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Freshman Brendan Hurley (West Islip, N.Y.) started the action with an unassisted goal less than a minute into the game. Matt Saxon (Bethesda, Md.) followed with an unassisted tally of his own before Hurley netted another with 10:42 left in the first.
Senior Jeff Vander Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.) added a fourth goal from David Elbot (Denver, Colo.) to extend the Raiders lead to 4-0 heading into the second period. The second quarter was much of the same with Colgate racking up three unanswered points to move out to a 7-0 advantage.
Ramsey Brame (West Hartford, Conn.) converted a pass from Reid Diamond (Boston, Mass.) early in the second to put Colgate up 5-0. Rob Trasolini (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Brain Robinson (Denver, Colo.) tallied what would prove to be the Raiders final two goals with just over a minute remaining in the half.
The game took a strange twist in the second half. Goalie Dusty Granet took over for starter Tom Ellis who had allowed seven goals after facing 23 shots in the first stanza. Granet managed to hold the Raiders scoreless with seven saves on 10 shots and the Lehigh offense went to work.
Stephen Marino put one past Jarolimek for a man-up goal and the only goal of the third period following one of Colgate’s six second-half penalties. Marino struck again in the fourth with an unassisted tally to continue Lehigh’s run. Greg Morin, Blake Best, and David Guant would add three more for the Mountain Hawks, but the Raiders held on for the 7-5 victory.
Jarolimek made 11 saves and held the Mountain Hawks scoreless in the first half, while picking up eight groundballs on the night. The Raiders outshot Lehigh 23-7 in the first, but the Hawks fought back in the second stanza leading the attempts 23-10. The Raiders improve to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League, while the Mountain Hawks fall to 3-10 on the season and 1-5 in league play.
Colgate is back in action on Sat., April 24 at 1 p.m. as they battle for a Patriot League playoff berth at Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa.
