Spring has sprung in Hamilton, so get out and enjoy the weekend. There’s tons to do.
You can’t go hungry on Friday: there are four Brown Bag luncheons to choose from: Women’s Studies at 11:30 a.m. in the Women’s Studies Center; an archaeology discussion at 11:45 in the ALANA Cultural Center seminar room; the Environmental Studies/Peace Studies lunch led by Colgate geology professor Paul Pinet at 12:15 in the cultural center multipurpose room, and the Food for Thought luncheon series with Arthur Ticknor ’86 discussing rural medicine at 12:15 in Career Services.
The Colgate Chamber Players will perform Schoenberg’s ‘Verklaerte Nacht’ beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the lower gallery of the Picker Art Gallery. There will be a lecture preceding the program, and a reception to follow.
Not to be missed is the second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Coalition Dinner in the Hall of Presidents at 7:00 p.m. The program titled ‘Spring for the Cure’ includes a guest speaker from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, performances by the ballet club and the Dischords, as well as a DJ. Buffet dinner and dessert are offered, and all proceeds go towards breast cancer research.
Be sure to head down to Brehmer Theater for University Theater’s Spring Festival of New Plays. Entirely written, directed, designed, acted, and built by students in the program, the spring festival is a culmination of the artistic achievements of students this year. Student admission is free with Colgate ID; general admission $5; seniors $3. Shows are offered Friday and Saturday night at 8:00 p.m., with an additional show at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Friday night, the Palace Theater plays host to the groovy, soulful tunes of Keller Williams. The event is sponsored by CAB Music and is $3 for Colgate students, $5 for the public. You must be 18 or older to enter. Doors open at 9 p.m.. Special guest and opening act Quintus will introduce Williams. Tickets are on sale now, or call the Palace Theater at 824-1420 for further details.
Film buffs can feast their eyes on Woman of the Year at 7:00 p.m. in Golden Auditorium, Runaway Jury at 9 p.m. in Love Auditorium, and Die Hard at the Hamilton Movie Theater at midnight. The midnight flick is $3; all other films are free.
Head to the Village Green on Saturday between noon and 3:oo p.m. for the Students for Environmental Action’s Springfest. Join SEA and 16 other campus groups to celebrate community, the environment, and warm weather. Enjoy free food, music, games, and activities. Open to students and local families.
The Yale University Slavic Choir will visit Colgate on Saturday in Love Auditorium at 12:30 p.m. The group will introduce Slavic folklore vocal production. A reception begins at noon, and the event is free and open to the public.
Sports fans can support men’s and women’s crew against Hamilton at Lake Moraine at 11:00 a.m. and women’s lacrosse versus Lehigh at 1 p.m.
Local authors will appear in the bookstore from 2:00-4:00 p.m. for a booksigning and informal reception. Refreshments are provided and the event is open to the public.
Hung up on The Apprentice and enthralled by life on Wall Street? Sophomores and juniors can make their way over to Persson Auditorium at 4:30 for a finance workshop with Brett Langbert ’95, VP, Goldman, Sachs & Co., and Dan Derman ’94, Bear Stearns & Co. The workshop will address what students can and should be doing to prepare themselves for a career in finance, as well as advice on what firms are looking for in a candidate, what one can do to make themselves more marketable, and insight on how to launch a career on Wall Street.
