Defense the Key in Men’s Lacrosse 11-2 Win Over Lafayette

Hamilton, N.Y.The Colgate men’s lacrosse team used a great defensive effort to shutout the Leopards of Lafayette for the final 42 minutes en route to an 11-2 Patriot League victory.  Andrew Jarolimek stopped eight shots and Jeff Vander Meulen scored three times for the Raiders.

 

Colgate jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Eddie Brennan at the mark of the first period.  Freshman Rob Ryan assisted on the tally.  A Lafayette goal tied the score at 1-1 with left in the first stanza.

 

The Raiders scored the next four goals to go up 5-1.  Brian Robinson scored at the mark of the first period and was followed by captain Jeff Vander Meulen who scored at of the first. 

 

Colgate took a 4-1 lead when Greg Berube took the ball the length of the field and scored with just two seconds left.  Ryan finished off the scoring run for the Raiders at the mark of the second period off an assist by Robert Trasolini.

 

The Leopards cut the lead to three before halftime with a Luke Ryan goal.

 

The teams played scoreless for much of the third period until freshman Brendan Hurley scored late in the frame to give the Raiders a 6-2 advantage headed to the fourth period.

 

Colgate came out on fire in the fourth period as Vander Meulen scored two goals in the first four minutes to put the Raiders up 8-2 at the 11 minute mark.  The Raiders added three more insurance goals to preserve an 11-2 victory.

 

 

The Raiders are now 5-4 for the campaign.  Colgate is next in action Wednesday, April 7, when the Raiders travel to Hobart to battle the Statesman in a Patriot League match-up.
