A lecture titled ‘Iraq from the Ground Level’ will be presented on Monday, March 29, by Mark Levine, a University of California at Irvine professor who has recently returned from Iraq. Levine specializes in Middle East history, cultures and religions and is an advisory board member of Occupation Watch, established by Global Exchange to monitor the U.S. occupation of Iraq and help build indigenous and autonomous civil society institutions in the country.
He is a contributor, along with Colgate professor Omid Safi, to the new book ‘Twilight of Empire: Responses to Occupation,’ copies of which he will sign following his presentation. (www.percevalpress.com/twilight.html).
This lecture is sponsored by the Colgate University Peace Studies Program and the Colgate Bookstore. The lecture will be at 12:15 p.m. in the Center for Women’s Studies in East Hall.
Also on Monday, Colgate professors and community representatives will discuss ‘The Future of Iraq and Implications for the Future of the Middle East.’ Nancy Ries, Colgate anthropology professor and peace studies director, will moderate the panel discussion.
Sociology professor Nigel Bolland, political science professor Bruce Rutherford, philosophy and religion professor Omid Safi, history lecturer Noor Khan, Hamilton College chaplain Jeff McArn, and Chris Rossi, representative with the Chenango Valley Peace Alliance, will serve as panelists.
Safi will sign copies of ‘Twilight of Empire: Responses to Occupation.’ Sponsored by the Chenango Valley Peace Alliance, the Colgate Peace Studies Program and the Colgate Bookstore. This panel discussion will be held at Love Auditorium, Olin Hall at 7 p.m. Monday, March 29.
