HAMILTON, N.Y.Two quick second period goals from Kyle Doyle and Dmitry Yashin helped the Colgate men’s hockey team secure a 3-1 victory over Rensselaer at Starr Rink Friday night.

A wrist shot from Doyle at 12:21 of the middle period proved to be the game winner when it redirected off of a defender’s stick and over Rensselaer netminder Nathan Marsters’ shoulder for a power play goal.

Colgate (10-8-3, 5-4 ECAC) increased its lead to 3-1 just 30 seconds later when Dmitry Yashin batted a rebound over behind Marsters.

Wilson opened the scoring for the Raiders at 17:40 of the first period when he initiated a give-and-go with Ryan Smyth and tapped the return pass past Marsters for a power play goal.

Rensselaer (11-9-2, 6-4-1 ECAC) answered with a power play goal of its own at 6:50 of the second frame when Nick Economakos buried a shot from a sharp angle to tie the game at 1-1.

Colgate goalie Steve Silverthorn stopped 37 of 38 shots en route to the victory.

‘My game’s started to improve a lot,’ Silverthorn said. ‘It’s especially important for me to improve in this part of the season, because we’re 5-4 and battling for a top four spot.’

Marsters finished the night with 24 saves in the losing effort.
