HAMILTON, N.Y.— The Colgate men’s hockey team used strong goaltending from junior Steve Silverthorn to complete its first weekend sweep of the season with a 4-1 win over Union Saturday night at Starr Rink.

Silverthorn turned aside 29 shots en route to his ninth win of the season.

Colgate’s (11-8-3, 6-4 ECAC) Darryl McKinnon scored twice including the game winning tally at 10:28 of the second period. He redirected a shot high to the stick side of Union (7-12-4, 2-8-2 ECAC) netminder Kris Mayotte to extend Colgate’s lead to 2-0.

McKinnon’s empty net goal with just over a minute remaining in the game solidified the Raiders’ victory and their first weekend sweep of the season.

Mike Campaner began the night’s scoring when his wrist shot from the right circle at 5:42 of the first period trickled past the goal line to give the Raiders an early 1-0 lead.

Union cut the Colgate lead in half at 4:40 of the third period when Jason Visser flipped a wrist shot past Silverthorn for a power play goal.

Adam Mitchell picked a floating puck out of midair and redirected it past Mayotte to extend Colgate’s lead to 3-1 at 12:06 of the third period.

Mayotte stopped 19 shots in the loss. Union has now gone winless in the last 12 games.
