Men’s Hockey Picks Up 4-1 Non-Conference Win Over Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich.Junior Darryl McKinnon (Port Elgin, Ont.) scored the game winning goal and sophomore Jon Smyth (Markham, Ont.) added a goal and an assist to lead the Colgate men’s hockey team to a 4-1 non-conference win over Western Michighan Saturday night at Lawson Arena.

Colgate 5-5-2, 2-2 ECAC) took a 1-0 lead at 3:28 of the first period on Jon Smyth’s (Markham, Ont.) eighth goal of the year and his second power play goal of the season. Sophomore Ryan Smyth (Clarence Creek, Ont.) assisted on the goal.

Western Michigan (7-8-2, 3-5-1 CCHA) knotted the game at one at 11:04 on a power play goal of its own. Dana Lattery skated in on Colgate junior goaltender Steve Silverthorn (Owen Sound, Ont.) and lifted a wrist shot over Silverthorn’s shoulder.

The Raiders took a 2-1 lead at 17:25 when McKinnon one-timed a centering pass from senior captain Rob Brown (Brockville, Ont.). Jon Smyth also assisted on the goal.

The two teams skated through a scoreless second period with Silverthorn making 13 stops and Western Michigan goaltender Scott Foster stopping five shots.

Colgate junior Justin Spencer (Tweed, Ont.) scored his first career goal 54 seconds into the third period to put the Raiders ahead 3-1.

Classmate Tony Masotto (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made it 4-1 three minutes later with his first collegiate goal.

Silverthorn finished with 34 saves while Foster ended the night with 22 stops.

Colgate returns home to host Harvard and Brown next weekend at Starr Rink. Both games start at 7 p.m.
