HANOVER, N.H.The Colgate women’s hockey team battled the #4 Big Green of Dartmouth on Friday night, but ran out of gas in the latter stages of the second and third periods in a 8-2 loss in the first game of the ECAC quarterfinals.

The Raiders led 1-0 after one period, for the first time ever against a ranked opponent.  Becky Irvine took a breakaway pass from Cheryl Setchell and beat goalie Liz Ferguson at 9:10 of the first period.  The goal was Irvine’s eighth of the season.

Colgate netminder Rebecca Lahar stopped 18 shots in the period to keep the Big Green off the scoreboard.

Colgate’s lead lasted till the 4:10 mark of the second period when Gillian Apps scored the equalizer for Dartmouth.  The Big Green scored the next three goals from Cherie Piper, Carly Haggard and Correne Bredin to put them up 4-1.

Colgate battled back with a power play goal at 17:51 from freshman Allison Paiano.  Her team-leading 11th goal was set up in front of the net by Kristy MacDonald and Maura Kehoe to bring the Raiders within two at the end of two periods.

A short-handed and tired Colgate squad battled for the final period but Dartmouth added four goals to set the final at 8-2.

Dartmouth outshot Colgate 51-13, with Lahar making 43 stops for the Raiders, while Ferguson made 11 stops for Dartmouth.

Colgate went 1-3 on the power play, while the Big Green finished 1-1.

The two teams are back in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Thompson Arena for game two of the best-of-three series.
