HAMILTON, N.Y. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling novelist Anna Quindlen will deliver the address at Colgate University’s 182nd commencement on Sunday, May 18. In responding to the selection of Quindlen, senior class president Kelli Wong said, ‘I am very excited that Anna Quindlen will be the class of 2003’s speaker, and I have no doubt that she will connect with each of us in a special way. She has impressed the world with her writing and I am looking forward to what she will add to this memorable event.’
A Newsweek contributing editor since 1999, Quindlens column appears every other week on the magazine’s back page, alternating with George F. Will. She began her journalism career as a reporter with The New York Post in 1974. She joined The New York Times in 1977 and in her 18 years at the paper held several posts including City Hall reporter, ‘About New York’ columnist, deputy metropolitan editor and the creator of a weekly column, ‘Life in the 30’s.’ Quindlen also wrote a regular column for the opinion page of the paper, the nationally syndicated ‘Public and Private.’ During her tenure at The Times, she won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary.
Quindlen is the author of numerous books, several of which have stayed on The New York Times best-seller list for extended periods of time. Her works include both fiction and non-fiction as well as two children’s books and the text to two books of photographs. Among her best-selling books are ‘Thinking Out Loud,’ ‘One True Thing,’ and ‘Black and Blue.’
A frequent commencement speaker, Quindlen has delivered addresses recently at Mt. Holyoke College, Sarah Lawrence College and Smith College and holds honorary degrees from Dartmouth College, Denison University, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and Moravian College. She was awarded the University Medal of Excellence by Columbia University, was a Poynter Fellow in Journalism at Yale and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Arts & Sciences in 1996.
A graduate of Barnard College, she lives in New York with her husband and three children.
