Hamilton, N.Y. ‘ As part of three days of activities in celebration of the inauguration of Rebecca S. Chopp, 15th president of Colgate University, the Colgate University Orchestra, conducted by Marietta Cheng, and the University Chorus, conducted by G. Roberts Kolb, will present a concert. The performance, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Memorial Chapel at 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 28.

The University Orchestra will begin the concert with their rendition of Dvorak’s lively ‘Carnival Overture’ and Chadwick’s colorful ‘Jubilee’ from his ‘Symphonic Sketches.’ George Whitefield Chadwick, one of America’s earliest and most respected symphonic composers, influenced American music tastes near the end of the 19th century.

The Colgate University Chorus will follow with a tribute to American composers. Ives’ ‘Psalm 67’ and Dello Joio’s ‘Song of he Open Road’ will offer the audience a sampling of 20th century American works. Chiharu Carpenter will accompany the Chorus.

Closing the evening’s festivities, the Orchestra will return to the Memorial Chapel stage to play Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67, a work that pays homage to the triumph of the human spirit.

According to Marietta Cheng, Colgate University Orchestra Conductor and Professor of Music, ‘The Inauguration Concert in honor of a new president is one of Colgate’s finest traditions. We are tremendously enthused to be a part of the festivities helping to celebrate a magnificent moment in Colgate history. Even Beethoven is delighted! This inauguration is distinctive because every member of the area community is encouraged to attend. The celebratory concert is open to all.’
