Hamilton, NY — – Each year, hundreds of Colgate University students participate in off-campus study programs that provide a rich mixture of cultural experiences and academic discipline. Colgate offers study opportunities in 22 locations, both internationally and within the United States. Most are led by the school’s own faculty members, which provides continuity with the Colgate experience for students. This spring, eight groups of Colgate students have embarked on off-campus study programs.
Economics professor Yufan Hao is leading 11 students on the China Study Group, hosted by Peking University. The students will develop their proficiency in Chinese language and will hear and witness the profound changes brought forth by economic reform through courses as well as trips within China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong including Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou. Visits to Xi’an, Duanhuang, Chengdu, and Lhasa will introduce the students to areas that are part of the very rich heritage of Chinese history, and a trip to Tibet will be a special feature.
The London English Study Group, directed by Deborah Knuth, professor of English, has 18 students. Participants have the opportunity to study the literature of London from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries in the contexts where it was created; experience 20th-century drama and fiction with a sense of their cultural context; study the architecture, art, and history of London through original research; and experience and analyze contemporary London culture.
Fifteen students on the Dijon Study Group in France, led by John Naughton, professor of Romance languages and literatures, will develop proficiency in French language and acquire thorough knowledge of French culture at the University of Burgundy.
