Hamilton, NY — Christopher Chase-Dunn, an expert in economic and political globalization, will give a lecture titled ‘Globalization, anti-globalization, and globalization from below’ at Colgate University on Thursday, March 2, at 4:30 p.m. in 27 Persson Hall. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Colgate’s Center for Ethics and World Societies, as well as the Core program and the department of sociology and anthropology. The theme for the Center for Ethics and World Societies this year is: ‘Homeless in the World: Refugees, Immigrants and the State.’
Chase-Dunn’s approach to globalization is rooted in historical precedents. A professor of sociology at Johns Hopkins University, he argues that globalization is not a recent phenomenon, as many people think, but one with ancient roots. In a book that he co-wrote, The Spiral of Capitalism and Socialism, which will be one subject of his lecture on March 2, Chase-Dunn predicts that unchecked capitalism and expansion of international trade under the direction of a dominant power ‘ namely, the United States ‘ will precede a reaction that would include warfare and social progress. He points to examples from the past to show that this reaction is certain unless the world learns from past mistakes.
