Hamilton – Alan Leshner, director of the National Institute On Drug Abuse, will give a lecture titled ‘Drugs and the Brain: Can Science Replace Ideology” at Colgate University on Sunday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Lathrop Hall, Room 209.
Leshner offered the following comments in anticipation of his talk: ‘Over the past several decades, advances in science have revolutionized our fundamental views of drug abuse and addiction and our ability to prevent and treat them. Unfortunately, prevention and treatment strategies applied in practice are still, in many instances, based on ideology and intuition rather than on scientific fact.’ His discussion will focus on what is currently known about biological, behavioral, and social mechanisms of drug abuse and addiction; the implications of this knowledge for prevention, treatment, and policy; and the goals for drug abuse and addiction research into the next millennium.
